Position: Public Affairs Specialist

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Track and maintain a comprehensive understanding of, and expertise with, legislation, emerging issues, and industry trends that impact the Company's license to operate
  • Identify and research legislative initiatives or other public policies that impact the Company's Mission and/or employees at the federal, state and local levels through positive interactions with elected officials and external opinion leaders
  • Assist to insure key stakeholders within the Company are informed with analyses of the significance, relevance and business impact of relevant legislative developments in a timely and actionable manner
  • Assist VP External Corporate Affairs to develop and enhance key relationships with community leaders and public officials to create a positive reputational and political environment that supports the Company's mission
  • Prepare communications to key stakeholders (employees, public officials, etc.) to communicate pertinent issues that impact the Company
  • Work cooperatively with affiliated industry, trade or consumer groups to accomplish Company goals
  • Develop and maintain strong and enduring relationships with the local area media to position the Company as an industry leader and good corporate citizen committed to its customers and communities
  • Prepare briefs for senior staff ahead of corporate meetings or corporate events with public officials and members of the press
  • Write and provide feedback on corporate press releases, talking points, and other public corporate communications, ensuring that public statements are consistent with the Company's Mission
  • Promote and publicize Company corporate activities and corporate programs to the media
  • Coordinate local media relations and social media for Company corporate events
  • Assist in the coordination of local media briefings for Company corporate events
  • Assist VP, External Corporate Affairs with special high-visibility projects as requested

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in communication, political science, business or related fields
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in public affairs, communication, and/or government relations
  • Knowledge of corporate communications and reputation management
  • Ability to develop strong, positive relationships with external and internal stakeholders geared toward the Company's Mission
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to form and maintain professional working relationships with a diverse group of individuals
  • Strong, proven written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to organize and manage projects in a fast-paced, rapidly changing, visible, deadline-oriented environment
  • Ability to prioritize and re-prioritize quickly
  • Ability to multi-task and produce quality materials under strict deadlines
  • Understands federal, state and local political issues and is knowledgeable about key players
  • Has experience with federal, state and local legislation
  • Understanding of the media and ability to develop and successfully place media stories, releases, op-eds, and other corporate communication
  • Has excellent and efficient working knowledge of PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Adobe programs
